Safco Steel Flat Files provide durable flat storage for blueprints, architectural drawings, engineering plans, maps, artwork, and other large-format documents that should not be rolled or folded. Commonly used in architecture firms, schools, engineering offices, print shops, and design studios, these heavy-duty steel files are designed for smooth operation, long-term durability, and efficient document organization.
The modular design allows units to be used individually or stacked to create a space-saving flat file storage system. Case-hardened ball-bearing rollers provide smooth drawer movement, while positive closures help keep drawers securely shut when not in use. A rear hood and hinged front depressor help protect stored documents from curling and dust buildup.

Can Safco steel flat files be stacked?
Yes. Safco steel flat files are modular and can be stacked to expand storage capacity while saving floor space. Bases are sold separately for installations that require easier access or a more finished appearance. The high base is designed to support up to 2 stacked flat files, while the low base can support up to 4 stacked units.
How many drawings fit in each flat file?
Capacity depends on paper weight, sheet size, and how often the drawings are accessed. Each unit can store up to 500 sheets for active filing, approximately 750 sheets for semi-active filing, or up to 1,000 sheets for inactive storage.
What do active, semi-active, and inactive filing mean?
These terms describe how frequently stored documents are accessed. Active filing typically means the drawers are accessed daily or very frequently. Semi-active filing refers to documents that may only be accessed a few times per month. Inactive filing is intended for long-term storage where documents are rarely removed.
Are flat files better than rolled blueprint storage?
Flat files are best for documents that need to remain flat, protected, and easy to access. They help prevent curling, edge wear, and handling damage. Rolled storage may work for less frequently used drawings, but flat storage is usually preferred for active plans, presentation drawings, maps, and artwork.
What happened to Mayline C-Files?
Mayline C-Files were discontinued after the Mayline brand changes and are no longer manufactured. While Safco flat files are a popular replacement option, they are not directly compatible with Mayline C-File systems because the outside cabinet dimensions are different. Existing Mayline bases, stackers, or accessories may not properly fit Safco flat files.
Do Safco steel flat files come assembled?
Yes. Safco steel flat files ship fully assembled. In most cases, the only assembly required is attaching the drawer handles after delivery.
Does this flat file have a fire rating?
No. Safco steel flat files are not fire-rated file cabinets and are not designed for fire protection applications.

Great storage for graphic art

Every time I open a drawer, I again think how pleased I am with the Safco flat file cabinet that I purchased from DEW. (DEW's prices are the best!) The cabinet is perfect for storing all of those art supplies that won't stand on edge but also are too large to be fully supported on a typical shelving unit. (Plus, in the cabinet, things are no longer stacked in piles ten layers deep.) So easy to access my large sheets of watercolor paper, gesso'd but unstretched sheets of canvas, oversized stencils, weaving loom parts, drafting supplies, etc etc. Thanks, DEW!

Nice Files
I thought the price was too good to be true. The files were delivered quickly. They are very heavy but can easily be moved by removing the drawers. I can tell these files will last me for years. Thank you DEW!

Very Happy
Solid construction, easy assembly and I love that there were color options. The color was exactly what I expected. It is heavy which is great for use and durability, but you need to have some strong helpers to get it in place.
